Hummingbird Lounge - Downtown New Buffalo

One of the best restaurants in New Buffalo is the Hummingbird Lounge. Located in an 1901 Victorian-style home, the Hummingbird lounge has spent the past two summers impressing guests and locals alike. This self-described “stylish yet approachable” restaurant offers classic cocktails with a twist alongside small plates and mains.

The interior space is warm and inviting, with the perfect blend of historical character and modern updates. The blue leather chairs and relaxed candlelight make for an upscale vibe perfect for date night, or a drink in your beach coverup after a day at the New Buffalo beach! 

Wondering about the name? Owner Ben Smock reports that he chose the Hummingbird because these birds drink all day, and as a year-round business they wanted to inspire an open and welcoming vibe for all. 

We recently enjoyed a meal in their outdoor dining space before the weather turned cool. We started with the smoked pineapple margarita and a Blackberry Hard Cider from Sierra Rose. 

As the appetizers could not be ignored, we ordered the crab cakes with Old Bay Mayo and tomato and burrata salad. Both were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, I could have been satisfied with refills on their starters alone.

After starting with two appetizers, we decided to share the Codfather Fish and Chips plate with Tartar Sauce. The batter on the cod was well-seasoned and the fries were excellent: crispy with a perfect pillowy potato texture inside. 

What You Need to Know:

• Food- The hummingbird is perfect for cocktails and apps or a main course. The chef has prepared a menu that features fish-forward American cuisine with plenty of fresh and local options.  
• Cocktails- Beautifully presented and well balanced, we recommend the Smoked Pineapple Margarita or the Negroni. They also have a selection of spirit-free cocktails so your whole group is covered. 
• Atmosphere- The Hummingbird Lounge has a spacious facility with bar and inside seating, covered outdoor seating, an event space and a dip-in bar that is open mainly in the busy season. 
• Service- The waitstaff knows their menu and can easily recommend the right cocktail or menu item to fit your mood.
• Price- Cocktails and menu items are all reasonably priced and for food of this quality in downtown New Buffalo, Hummingbird Lounge is a fabulous choice.
• Seasonality- The Hummingbird Lounge is open all year ‘round! 
• Reservations- Reservations are accepted and recommended in the busy season. They do fill up but there is often a space at the bar. 
• Events- Hummingbird Lounge not only has an event space but most of their spaces are available for rentals and private parties.
